Federal and State Shadow Treasurers, The Hon Joe Hockey MP and Mike Baird MP, have outlined their views on the challenging economic climate at the annual Davidson Business Breakfast, hosted by local MP Jonathan O’Dea.

“The breakfast provided a rare opportunity to hear first-hand, the views of the alternate Treasurers for Australia and NSW,” Mr O’Dea said.

“It has been particularly timely, given the current world economic crisis and the efforts domestically and overseas to address the economic downturn.

“In New South Wales, Labor’s record of financial mismanagement has left many asking, ‘Where has all the money gone?’

“The question is particularly pertinent given the enormous financial windfall the State has received from the GST, which is collected by the Commonwealth but redistributed back to the states.

“The hospital system, the transport network and jobs are just some of the areas that are languishing in NSW for the lack of vision and competent management,” Mr O’Dea said.

Federal Shadow Treasurer, Joe Hockey criticized Labor’s handling of the world economic downturn and warned that under Labor, unemployment would continue to rise along with taxes.

Shadow State Treasurer, Mike Baird told the meeting, “I’m for cutting taxes, as already outlined in our payroll tax plan, to support jobs. So far we’ve had only rhetoric and no action from the Premier, while 200 people a day are being put out of work in NSW”, he said.

“More than 125 people attended the breakfast and overwhelmingly positive feedback was received from the business community,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
