Application forms for appointment as a Justice of the Peace (JP) in New South Wales are now available on the Internet.

Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea, said JP application forms could be downloaded from the website www.jp.nsw.gov.au

He said the new application form had been designed to make it easier for JP applicants to undertake the necessary process for appointment.

“Justice of the Peace applicants are also able to access the Code of Conduct for JPs and A Handbook for JPs in NSW at the above website,” Mr O’Dea said.

“These documents set out the acceptable standards of conduct for Justices of the Peace, as well as the detailed procedures for carrying out duties.

“An application for a new appointment as a JP still requires nomination by a State Member of Parliament. However, reappointment does not require the same nomination,” he said.

“Justice of the Peace application forms are also available from my Electorate Office at Suite 8A, 12-18 Tryon Road at Lindfield or by phoning 9880 7400.

Mr O’Dea said appointment to the Office of Justice of the Peace is now made for a period of five years.

“For JPs who previously had a lifetime appointment, the transitional period to seek reappointment under the Act ended in December 2006.

“Previous JPs can check the status of their registration in the Public Register of JPs. If someone does not appear in this register, they are not registered as a Justice of the Peace in New South Wales and cannot perform JP duties,” Mr O’Dea said.

“It is important for people to know if they are currently registered as a Justice of the Peace, as penalties apply for acting as a JP without proper authority,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
