The State Government has been accused of blatant double standards by the Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea.

“While members of the community are required to obtain approval for significant work on their property, it seems the State Government considers itself ‘set apart’.

“This arrogant attitude follows a question on notice to the Environment Minister regarding the future of the WSN site at Belrose,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I asked what Government approvals will be required for WSN’s proposal to further increase the amount of garbage to be put into its Belrose landfill site by an extra 180,000 tonnes above previously agreed levels.

“The answer from the Minister was  … none!

“So while the rest of the community must seek permission for any major work on their property, the State Government owned WSN can dump an extra 180,000 tonnes of garbage at a local landfill site and no approvals are necessary.

“It is clearly a double standard that leaves the door open for even more garbage to be dumped at the site without any approvals whatsoever,” Mr O’Dea said.

“So when will this all end – and what guarantees do we have for the future?

“We have already witnessed a back-down on undertakings to rehabilitate the site for future recreation, despite protests from the local community.

“In addition, after extending the landfill volume by 180,000 tonnes, WSN is likely to be sold, as the Government revealed in the November Mini Budget.

Clearly however, both the NSW State Labor Government and the WSN Belrose site do have one thing in common - they are both full of garbage,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
