The NSW government’s precarious financial position is due to the Iemma government’s waste and mismanagement, according to Jonathan O’Dea, Member for Davidson and Chair of the Opposition’s WasteWatch Committee.

“The Iemma Government’s weak fiscal position is due to a history of more than 13 years of waste and financial mismanagement and not its failed attempt to obtain legislative approval for the sale of the State’s electricity assets”, Mr O’Dea said.

“The Coalition opposed Mr Iemma’s partial privatisation of the electricity sector because it is not in the public interest at this time”.

“Selling the State’s electricity assets when there is a high level of uncertainty surrounding the energy sector is economically irresponsible”.

“Mr Iemma would not be so desperate to sell electricity assets if the State’s revenue was managed responsibly”.

“The NSW Labor government failed to properly invest in infrastructure when revenue was available and now they have produced a budget dependant on the sale of government assets, despite promises to the contrary”, said Mr O’Dea.

“Mr Iemma is now selling electricity assets despite clear opposition from his own party, the NSW Parliament and the people of NSW”.

“It is clear Mr Iemma cannot be trusted with the financial management of NSW”, Mr O’Dea concluded.
