The old adage of how many deaths do you need before anyone will act applies to Mona Vale Road at St Ives according to the Member for Davidson Jonathan O’Dea.

“As recently reported in the Manly Daily, 20 lives have been lost along this lethal stretch of Mona Vale Road at St Ives in the past 15 years. One death last month created substantial media attention when a popular young woman lost her life,” Mr O’Dea said.

“Residents are understandably angry about the condition of Mona Vale Road, having made repeated representations both directly and through me on their behalf.

“I have written to the Roads Minister, Eric Roozendaal, spoken with the RTA at a senior level, asked written questions of the Minister in Parliament and raised the matter in Ku-ring-gai Council Traffic Committee meetings which the RTA attends.

“I have arranged for the RTA to speak to the residents direct and asked the RTA to meet with residents, Council and myself but to date we have not had any real progress.

“The Roads Minister has said the RTA has thoroughly investigated Mona Vale Road at St Ives and a safety barrier is not possible. However, local residents and I believe more must be done as a matter of urgency before there is another fatality.

“While the RTA fiddles and ponders other remedial action, motorist’s safety remains compromised.

“Residents have made submissions without success and are very frustrated with the lack of response. This issue is now becoming more political following extensive endeavours to seek a quiet resolution to the road safety issues.

I call on the Minister and the RTA to promptly focus on making Mona Vale Road at St Ives safer for motorists, local residents and pedestrians.”
