The Member for Davidson Jonathan O’Dea says he is disappointed plans for new netball courts have stalled, leaving thousands of young netballers in limbo as they prepare for beginning of another netball season.

“After growing up with six sisters who were keen netballers I particularly appreciate the need for more netball facilities on the Northern Beaches and elsewhere,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I am very supportive of new netball courts at Belrose, have met with relevant parties and raised the matter in Parliament. I am disappointed to hear the proposed site at the Belrose Quarry will probably not proceed following the identification of geotechnical problems.

“I have spoken with and written to Warringah Council Administrator Dick Persson seeking a solution before his term ends in September this year. I have also suggested the TAFE site between Wyatt Avenue and Linden Place on Forest Way be added to those alternate sites already being considered. I will ask a written question of the Government regarding this suggestion when Parliament resumes next week, having clarified last year that there is no plan to construct a new TAFE college on the site.

“There is obviously great disappointment and frustration within the netball community with the current situation. The momentum must be maintained at the Council and community level to find a solution sooner rather than later. If the Belrose Quarry site is too costly, another venue should be found without appearing to give up.

“At a time when childhood obesity is a growing problem, encouraging girls to play netball promotes a healthy lifestyle.”
