Jonathan O'Dea MP, the Member for Davidson, said he is encouraged by a response to his representations regarding the Blue Gum High Forest (BGHF) at St Ives being placed on the State Heritage Register.

“Planning Minister Frank Sartor has recently responded to my written question on notice from June, indicating that the Heritage Office has commenced its assessment of the site regarding its nomination for heritage status,” Mr O’Dea said.

“The significance of this site cannot be underestimated. Governor Phillip discovered these special forests in 1788 and the Blue Gums, Blackbutts and Ironbark trees were plundered to build the fledgling colony.

“I expect the timber survives in some of our heritage buildings like Hyde Park Barracks, our wharves and possibly NSW Parliament House. However, more has to be done to preserve the 17.7 hectares of live forest that remains at St Ives.

“To help preserve the whole area I have asked the State Government to contribute towards the purchase of Lot 102 Rosedale Road (adjoining the BGHF) so that this vital piece of our history can be preserved for generations to come.”

Mr O’Dea said that the community enjoys the BGHF across a wide range of public uses. Community fundraising has shown how much locals care about bringing Lot 102 Rosedale Road into public ownership as part of the BGHF.

“I acknowledge the work of various community groups, government departments and Ku-ring-gai Council, who have worked hard to manage the forest and ensure its preservation,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I trust the NSW Government will respond favourably to assist the local community’s continuing efforts to preserve this pristine and unique piece of historic bushland.”
